MS TEAM: The Portal for E-Classes

Covid-19 pandemic took the world by surprise. It has affected everyone without exception and completely upended daily life of everyone, especially students. Educationists became acutely aware that children‟s learning must continue through this period of uncertainty and that an effective schedule needs to be carved for students. This led to the task of selecting an effective, reliable, and safe medium to serve students' needs as well as aspirations of parents. After thorough research, we at Ahlcon International School, gave a nod for Microsoft Teams as it can seamlessly connect both the teacher and the learner and is easily accessible on desktop(Windows, Mac, and Linux), web, and mobile (Android and iOS). Under the mentorship of Sunita Mam, middle section teachers took up the challenge of conducting their online classes on this new platform. They efficaciously guided the parents about the usage by sharing the step-to-step prepared diligently by Ms. Lovey Gupta. This digital hub has also brought conversations, content, assignments, and apps together in one place, letting educators create vibrant learning environments for their learners. This platform has been proving its utility by building strong and reliable collaborative classrooms and connecting learning communities well. Teams‟ key features of providing educators to quickly converse with students, sharing files and websites, and creating and grading assignments make it unique and accepted. Interactive lessons and effective and timely feedback are making Teams E -classes well accepted in this critical time of Covid -19.Parents have widely expressed their satisfaction and gratitude towards the school and teachers for leveraging the right platform and taking care of the students in such an effective way.

PROGRESSIVE TEACHER: A LEARNER BY HEART

By Madhuri Dadhich
“Devices come and go, but progressive teachers who adapt will last longer than any other device,” quoted by Educator Andrew Marcinek.
Being a teacher! Isn’t it a beautiful act, a wonderful reality and a vocation of pride?
Teaching is not just any other profession! It’s a profession which gives me the ability to transform a raw human being into a creative, sensible citizen.
To transform the student, continuing professional development (CPD) is the USP of Ahlcon thus, all teachers are self motivated and self directed.  As I believe, if I learn continuously then it will assure high level of expertise and will enable me to keep my professional skills and knowledge up-to- date. During summer break, I wanted to carry forward this legacy of learning therefore I did CELTA ((Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) from Cambridge. It is one of the most intensive, prestigious, and most widely recognized qualification as far as ELT (English Language Teaching) is concerned.
I have learnt new techniques like, to teach grammar with context, teaching of sub- skills,  importance of elicitation in language learning and significance of CCQs ( concept check questions).  I have learnt various ways to teach students who struggle to learn English language and it will be easy to help and facilitate, if they have difficulty in learning.

I fully believe in the quote by Benjamin Franklin,” without continual growth and progress, words like improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”  I want to turn mirrors into windows that is to change a students’ focus from being self-centred to world-centred. The journey of being an ordinary teacher to a teacher as a facilitator, curriculum designer, moderator and a change maker is amazing.

“Rubrics – An Assessment Tool”

A workshop “Rubrics – An Assessment Tool” was conducted by Ms. Divya Kapoor for all the teachers of the Middle Section on 6th May, 2017 in the school German Lab. The emphasis of the workshop was to highlight the need of using rubrics for a fair, comprehensive and objective assessment.

The workshop began by discussing the requirement of assessment in every sphere of our lives. The group discoursed about the benefits of assessment also talked about the problems with the current assessment process. The presenter then focused upon the need of change in the field of assessment and how it can effectively be carried out.

An innovative cookie activity was carried out, during which all the participants were offered cookies to eat. Later they were asked to assess the cookie and rate it on a scale of 0 – 12. On comparing the marks given by the participants, many important points could be deduced. These included wide range of disparity in the marks allotted, using different parameters for judgement and also certain circumstantial parameters. The resource person then focused upon the fact that only if there was a pre-decided criterion for judgement, then the results would have been different from what they were now. Further, the different types of rubrics, their advantages/disadvantages and the imperative points to be focused upon while creating a rubric were discussed.

The workshop concluded, by a task performed by different subject groups wherein they chose one learning outcome from their domain and created a rubric for the same. The groups then shared their rubrics with all the participants. The workshop surely ignited the thought process of the participants and motivated then towards using rubrics for a nondiscriminatory and wide spread technique of assessment.

Evoking Excellence

Ahlcon not only provides holistic development to the students but the teachers here are also given the same experience. The same was the purpose of the ‘Evoking Excellence’ workshop. This workshop was organized by Swami Chidrupanandaji. He has been associated with Chinmaya Mission right from his childhood and was guided by pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji. A magnet of love for youngsters, a guide and mentor to young parents and elders, swamijis dynamic teachings and approach to life have inspired many and turned the Noida center into a vibrant hub of spiritual activity.

In the first half of the workshop Dr. Jawahar Surishetti (A well-known educationist, New York Times – Da Vinci Innovator and Advisor to Government of Chattisgarh and Government of India) enlightened us with his words. He spoke about how to develop interest in students for education. The only way to do this is by bridging the gap between students and teachers and give students responsibility so that they are responsible at the same time. He added if education is mixed with emotions it could stay with students forever, learning is best when we focus with our mind body and soul or in other words if we use our 5 or 6 senses and giving students real life examples this will help them to relate with it and they shall never forget it.

In the second half of the workshop Swami Chidrupanandji gave us the insight of his thoughts he explained about the personality tree
·         Character - is the fragrance of the personality.
·         Culture - is the root of the character.
·         Values - are like the branches of the personality tree
·         Education - is watering the tree of personality tree.
·         Health - is the leaves, flowers and the fruits of the personality tree.

Overall the workshop was very enlightening a great source of learning it will defiantly help in a better understanding of teaching and learning.

  8. In these difficult times, the teachers have stepped up, like always, to ensure that schooling and learning processes are not disrupted as the world is going through one of its worst health and humanitarian crisis. Teachers are humans and have a family with all the challenges and problems that they must cope with while setting an example for students and parents. We may often forget this. It is, however, important to recall the personal sacrifices that teachers make to keep things going. I wish to thank you for doing whatever you can in a difficult situation, to say the least. I am reminded of a parable that my mentor used to cite to highlight the power of grace during a crisis and how it inspires others. A duck in a pond seems to float mystically and magically, but beneath the surface are two small feet that are rigorously at work that are hidden but essential for completing the image of grace.
